In today’s “always on” economy, there’s an expectation for round-the-clock services. This has led to an increased need for night shift workers.
Many industries, from healthcare and emergency services to hospitality and manufacturing, rely on so-called “graveyard shift” workers to ensure smooth operations and uninterrupted customer service.
Every night, more than 15 million Americans work the night shift.
On May 8, we celebrate National Night Shift Workers Day. It’s a time for employers to show appreciation for those employees who work through the night to keep the wheels of their businesses running. It’s also a great opportunity for companies to review their employee benefits to ensure they’re geared to support the unique challenges night shift workers face due to their unusual schedules.
There’s an array of physical, mental, and social impacts associated with night shift work:
Night shift work can have significant adverse effects on workers’ physical health. This is primarily due to disruptions to their sleep patterns and circadian rhythms, creating reduced and/or poor sleep quality. Suboptimal sleeping habits can trigger a range of physical health issues, including an increased risk of chronic conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
The mental health implications of night shift work can be equally detrimental. Night shift workers are at an increased risk of developing mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, and burnout.
When people don’t get enough quality sleep, their work productivity and efficiency will suffer. This can manifest in frequent errors, forgetfulness, and other inefficiencies, which can impact the company’s bottom line.
Sleep-deprived workers often experience impaired cognitive function, leading to decreased attention spans, slower reaction times, poor concentration, and impaired decision-making capabilities. This sharply increases the likelihood of workplace accidents, particularly in environments like manufacturing and trucking.
Night shift work conflicts with many of the expectations and norms of family and social life, which typically align with daytime hours. Too often, this puts a strain on workers’ personal relationships and reduces their participation in social activities, which can lead to feelings of isolation and resentment.
Due to their irregular hours and less time spent with friends and family, many night shift workers feel like they’re missing out on important parts of life. Some tend to overspend or make impulse purchases to make themselves feel better. This can lead to them having difficulty paying bills, or incurring excessive, high-interest credit card debt.
Let’s consider some ways you can celebrate National Night Shift Workers’ Day and ensure your employees get the recognition they richly deserve:
Giving back makes people feel better. Find out what causes your employees are passionate about and get involved. For instance, if environmental issues are among their top concerns, you could organize a cleanup of a local park.
Give your night shift workers the opportunity to have some fun in the sun. A team picnic or cookout is a great way to encourage team bonding and connection in an informal setting.
Night shift workers should be allowed to enjoy normal and healthy lives both inside and outside of work. Celebrating National Night Shift Workers Day by focusing on employee wellness and showcasing benefits such as your Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a great way to support your employees’ physical and mental well-being. You could also offer seminars or events focusing on wellness and mental health, or host a team yoga event.
Financial wellness initiatives are an effective way to help employees manage their finances more efficiently through:
In addition, why not introduce flexible wage payment options like Earned Wage Access (EWA)? This allows your night shift workers to access their earned wages when they need them before their regular payday.
National Night Shift Workers Day 2024 is an occasion to salute those who do important work when most of us are asleep or spending quality time with our friends and families.
